Great conservation with a student today reaching beyond the walls of the classroom into many areas of life. In this lively discussion he touched on a point and I responded “I wrote about that last night on my blog.” With wide eyes he read the post and showed appreciation with a knuckle-bump.
Share what is on your heart to touch a soul.
You may be the only person that helps someone become who they are supposed to be.
I have considered reading learning, but is all reading learning?
Reading can be purely for pleasure. I am curious, what’s your purpose in reading?
Allow yourself to explore. What would you suggest I read/explore? What has you excited? How do you share books?
Ready to read and learn.

Had a student ask me to read part of a paper they were writing for an assignment in another class. After telling him his writing was clear he took me through the steps that led to his thoughts. We discussed his logic and then we walked to my bookcase where I removed a book to explain the conclusions he stated were in line with the research in the book. It was exciting talking about how the book changed my life. The learning continued as he shared his paper and the book with the class.
Another great adventure.
Oh, the book is The Last Word on Power by Tracy Goss.
Every student, every one of them were grinning today. Absolutely a magical day of learning. Could not have asked for a better outcome.
What did we do? Ask for assistance and expect all our expectations to be exceeded.
Our need was great in two areas (an understatement to get the point across) and we were short on time in both.
Enter a superhero from Texas State Technical College Waco to handle the needs of my seniors and the needs of our SkillsUSA teams. She had everyone riveted with sage advice and practical examples. Her delicacy in handling hearts drew commitment from the recipient. We saw fire in her eyes as she sternly drove non-negotiable points home.
Expectations were exceeded when students asked questions and sought advice on other issues. The buzz with my students has not subsided. We will use our superhero’s call to action as a springboard to reach new heights.
Cherrie McBratney is the superhero who shared her gift with us today. We are still grinning. Thanks.
“What have you done for fun lately?”
For years I have asked this when greeting folks in person or on the phone. The results are along the following lines.
*glazed over as they are only waiting for their turn to talk
*no real answer
*”hmm” whispers over their lips as they grasp the question
*fire-hose response of their fun adventures
Fun needs to be a requirement. Talk about it everywhere or better yet do fun stuff.
“I wonder how many trees this is?” One of my students asked this as we briefly unboxed paper in the workroom today. Their next thought was: “I’ll Google it.”
We didn’t have the whole tree, only half.
Isn’t that cool how they questioned? “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” Albert Einstein
Bonus question. How much paper did we unbox?
“The only rational way of educating is to be an example-of what to avoid, if one can’t be the other sort.”
